WARM NEW SPIRIT WEAR ON SALE NOW!!

New long sleeve spirit wear items are now available! Check out the link to see the new hooded sweat jacket and men’s golf jacket. These jackets will make great presents for kids, parents and teachers! This year we are offering a Holiday package! Buy either new jacket with an RNE Tervis tumbler and get a $4.00 discount. We will be selling spirit wear before the November 21^st PTA meeting and we will also sell at the school the morning of December 8^th. Please come by and purchase some RNE goodies!

Remember, beginning in February we will start our Friday Spirit Wear competitions! One Friday each month the class who wears the most spirit wear wins some great prizes. Last year teachers won gift cards for local restaurants and kids won t-shirts and water bottles!

HEALTH & WELLNESS UPDATE

Children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous activity every day to grow up to a healthy weight. Below are some easy ideas to get moving!

Get outside this weekend! Have fun while exercising. Below are some ideas to bring the whole family together, enjoy the great outdoors all while getting some physical activity:

- LET’S EXPLORE: Travel by foot. Go on a hike on the many nature trails surround the Chattahoochee River . Hiking improves cardiovascular health & builds stronger bones.

• Find nature and outdoor events near you: www.nwf.org

- LET’S RIDE: Ride your bike with family or friends around your neighborhood or visit some local parks. Big Creek Park (off Old Alabama Rd) offers bike trails for beginners, intermediate and advanced! Biking is a fun activity that improves endurance and balance.

• Find forests and parks near you: www.discovertheforest.org

- LET’S PLAY: Exercising doesn’t have to be boring. Have some fun at the playground and get active outside! Enjoy the playgrounds at Roswell Area Park , Will’s Park, Morgan Falls (Sandy Springs). Getting active outside helps improve coordination, balance and agility Keep kids healthy mentally and physically by making time for play each day.

Vision and Hearing Screening

Volunteers are needed to assist with our annual Vision and Hearing Screening on Monday, September 19^th and Tuesday September 20^th, from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm. Please consider supporting with this very important program. No prior experience is necessary. A brief training will teach you everything you need to know. Don't forget to also purchase the 2011-2012 RNE Calendar so you can stay on top of all fun events, holidays and important dates throughout the upcoming year!

Pre-purchase an RNE Spirit Voucher online through our new PayPal button!! Be sure to print an order form (under Forms tab in the above menu), specify items and sizes desired and attach your PayPal receipt. Then send your form back to school via backpack. Orders will be filled on a weekly basis after your form has been received by the Spirit Wear committee. Checks will also be accepted - attach to your order form specifying items and sizes as described for vouchers. Spirit wear purchases will be delivered through backpack the week following receipt of the order.

2011-2012 PTA Membership - JOIN TODAY!!

Roswell North Spruce Up Day - We Need Your Help!

SATURDAY, AUGUST 6^TH, 2011 - 8:00am – 11:00am

As everyone is quickly realizing, our Roswell North Elementary School will soon be opening it’s doors to students and teachers for another great year.

To get ready for this new school year, there has been lots of work done on the inside of the school to get it spruced up for the upcoming August 11^th, 2011 Open House and the first day of school. Now, we need your help to do the same on the outside! Fulton County Schools takes care of the basics like mowing and some pruning, but it’s up to us (parents, students & friends of the school) to take care of the grounds.

Especially, the various planting areas and planted flower pots. This is where you can help!

Our tasks:

• Spread Pine Straw at the front of the school
• Spread Mulch/pull weeds at the school sign
• Plant a few small shrubs/flowers
• Pulling of small weeds in various planting beds
• Prune trees (low hanging branches) around the car pool drive and a few in the parking lot
  at the front
• Trim Ivy near the front steps
• Prune some low hanging branches on the Crape myrtles in the front parking lot (purple
  flowering trees)
• General clean-up

Please feel free bring your children, they are very welcome and we can use their great help too. Items to bring: gloves, rakes, broom, blower, flat shovels, hand pruners and loppers & WATER!

Celebrate Earth day by recycling your old cell phones!

Did you know that electronics produce 70% of all toxic waste in landfills? Clear your clutter at home and reduce landfill waste!  RNE turns trash into cash by recycling old cell phones in ANY condition. (phones only please, no chargers or extra batteries). RNE Receives Grant from City of Roswell for New Trees   

The RNE PTA's Exterior Beautification Committee has been working on a grant proposal to the City of Roswell for matching funds for a tree planting project.  At last week's city Administration and Finance Committee meeting, the motion to approve the RNE PTA and the City of Roswell Tree Planting Partnership was approved. What this means for RNE is that the city of Roswell will be giving RNE (PTA) $598.26 toward the purchase of trees for the north side of the school, on the hill.  With the Exterior Beautification Committee’s matching funds, committee volunteers will be planting a number of trees including oaks, magnolias and cryptomeria on the hill to replace trees that were lost during the spring of 2008 tornado.

The Committee would like to especially thank Mrs. Martha Powell our Media Specialist at RNE and one of our great RNE parents, Tricia Hovorka for their hard work at writing and putting together the grant. In addition, we also want to thank Danny Blitch, the City of Roswell’s Grant Manager and of course Roswell’s Administration and Finance & Recreation and Parks Committee consisting of the City Administrator - Kay Love, Mayor - Jere Wood, and Council Members - Nancy Diamond, Rich Dippolito, Kent Igleheart, Jerry Orlans, Betty Price and Becky Wynn.

Mark your calendars, for the tree planting day scheduled for 8:00am on Saturday, December 4, 2010. We'd love for the RNE parents and kids to come out to help. Bring a shovel and be ready to dig!

RNE Water Bottles - Replacement Caps

The caps on this years green RNE water bottles have not held up well. The manufacturer sent us new caps to replace them with. If yours has broken, please email Kristen Tornow with the number of caps you need, your child's name, and his/her teacher's name and grade. Your new cap(s) will be sent home with your child.

Each year Keep Roswell Beautiful chooses a school that has gone above and beyond to incorporate environmental initiatives as the Environmental School of the Year.  Because of Roswell North Elementary’s Environmental Club, the waste free lunches, the recycling programs, and the overall commitment to environmental responsibility, Keep Roswell Beautiful chose RNE for this award in the 2009-2010 school year.  RNE was honored May 25 at Roswell City Hall.
